Power not Talk

1 Cor. 4

Paul continued his teaching on the divisiveness within the Corinthians, that being that some factions claimed Apollos or Cephas and had spoken ill of Paul. It really is of no consequence to Paul because he knew that when the Lord comes he will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. It is only then that the record will be established, that commendations will be given.

He wanted to remind the people of all the blessings that they have received in Christ, and at the same time remind them of the life style of the apostles. The apostles, leaders, and teachers paid a heavy price for the leadership that they exerted. They were weak, while the Corinthians were strong, and while the Corinthians were held in honor, they were held in disrepute. The apostles endured hunger and thirst, lack of clothing, were buffeted and homeless, and labored with their own hands. When they were reviled, they blessed; when persecuted, they endured; when slandered, they entreated. They had become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things. Is such a lifestyle as this one to claim as their own apart from the express calling of God? No, but it is one that gives a degree of authority. Paul's words should be heeded.

Paul did not write these things to shame the Corinthians but instead to admonish them as beloved children. Paul felt very much a father to these people. He urged them to follow his leadership and lifestyle even to the degree that he had sent Timothy to them to remind them of all that they had been taught. He assured them that he would come to them if the Lord willed and root out these arrogant people altogether. For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power. What do you wish? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love in a spirit of gentleness? In essence Paul is telling them to listen up. Heed the words of their spiritual father. Cut out the divisiveness, and walk and talk as they were taught.

Father,
How important and true are Your words! Help me to obey them implicitly and immediately. Let no pride or arrogance seep into my life.
In Jesus name,
Amen
