Mt. 21:9
"And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!"
As Jesus rode into Jerusalem, the crowd was excited. In fact, they were shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! What insight this crowd had! First they cried hosanna which means, help us because they knew Jesus had the power to save, in essence they were crying out for a Savior. Secondly, they knew He was the Son of David and that He came in the name of the Lord. But not everyone responded this way, the Pharisees and Scribes were indignant at His behavior and at the response of the crowds, even the response of the children. Why were the people who knew the most about the prophecies the most resistant? Why were they so resistant to the truth?
As He entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up and questioning His identity. The crowds answered, This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee. Jesus immediately went to the temple and cleansed it of the corruption that the Pharisees and Scribes had allowed. Instead of money-changers and over inflated temple sacrifice prices, Jesus declared His house a house of prayer. Even in the temple the children were crying out, Hosanna to the Son of David! Once again, their words combining praise and help. No wonder the Pharisees were indignant. Had the crowd ever followed after them like this? Had they ever received this exuberant praise? Had they ever had their corruption exposed in such a public way? I am sure they felt their control over the people slipping from their hands. Ironically, their hearts and mouths couldn't cry out for the one thing they needed most, a Savior, but soon they would cry out the words which would reveal their hearts, Crucify Him.
Father,
Thank You for drawing me to You so that Jesus could be my Savior. My heart cries out, Hosanna! I praise Your name!
In Jesus name,
Amen
