According to Your Word

Lk. 1:38
and Mary said, 'Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.' And the angel departed from her.

What a great attitude Mary had! Initially she is confronted by an angel, as it that in itself were not an unsettling event, who perceived her troubled spirit and comforted her telling her not to be fearful. Then the angel proceeded to tell here that she had found favor with God. Mary was well aware of who she was just a peasant girl without status or importance. But before she could respond, he continued saying, Behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus. He will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end. Oh my! How could she even take all this in? But Mary merely said, How will this be since I am a virgin? No doubt or disbelief just wanting to know the how...The angel responded saying, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy--the Son of God. By this time, most people would be doubting the truth of this situation because the bounds of reality would be stretched beyond comprehension. After the angel told her about her cousin Elizabeth and her conception, he concluded with, For nothing is impossible with God.  Truly all this would be humanly impossible! Mary responded with a simple statement,  'Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.' Such faith and submission! God didn't want Mary to figure out the how to, He only wanted her to have faith in Him, to humbly rely on Him, and to submissively obey. What a great statement! Let it be to me according to your word should be my attitude every day. God doesn't want me to make a plan, He only wants me to humbly and submissively obey.

Father,
Mold my heart and mind into humble submission. I confess my strong self-will. I know it is sin. Give me your grace and strength to have this same attitude.
In Jesus name,
Amen
