Footsteps

1 Pet. 2:21

For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you might follow in His footsteps.

Initially, to what have we been called? Previous to this verse, Peter had developed the idea of suffering unjustly. Attesting to the fact that suffering for what you have done wrong is not our call, but to the contrary, if we suffer for doing good and we endure the suffering then this is a gracious things in the eyes of God. Why is suffering a gracious thing to God? Because that is what Jesus did. He did not sin, was not deceitful, did not revile in return, did not threaten. His life was the complete opposite of what He received. Instead of lashing back out,  He entrusted himself to His Father as the One who judges justly. [Vengeance is mine says the Lord. I will repay.] He even went a step farther. He took on Himself our sins so that we might live to righteousness! What an amazing Gift! He took all of our gross sinful nature, from the root to the manifestation, so that He could freely give us everything, everything pertaining to life and godliness! It is these steps that we are to follow.We are to extend the same grace that He gave us to others whether they deserve it or not. And who are we to decide who deserves it?  Not a chance!  We are to entrust our souls to the Father and let Him handle justice.  We are to partner with Him to display the glory of God in our lives. 

After reading this entire passage, I am amazed at all God has given us: His Son, the most amazing Grace, and His words, the game-plan  for our lives. We are to follow the footsteps and not veer off on our own, never suffering for doing wrong. In light of Jesus' showing grace to me, I am to respond to others in return. He is with me as is His Spirit with each step I take.

Father,

What a clear picture! Thank You. Help me to think of Jesus with every step that I take. Open my eyes to opportunities to share  grace with others. Keep my heart free from giving back in return.
