A Pleasing Theme

Ps. 45:1
My heart overflows with a pleasing theme; I address my verses to the King; my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe.

Great verse! What in my life is a pleasing theme to God? What about my life, my words, my tongue is quick to be pleasing to the King of all Kings? Your throne, O God, is forever and ever. The scepter of Your kingdom is a scepter of uprightness. What a verse of praise! I know that praise would be the first must for a pleasing theme. Although it shouldn't be a must but an overflowing praise. It should readily and easily flow off my tongue. Praise like this comes from a deep, intimate relationship with God, one where thoughts and actions are following the voice of the Spirit who is bringing my life into conformity with Jesus.

Then I would think a pleasing theme for my life would be obedience, this obedience would include confession and repentance. A life seeking such growth would be a pleasing  to God. My theme would also include study of His word so that I can hear the Him speak to me. Right along with that would be my words back to Him which is prayer. But what about service? Should it be included in this pleasing theme? Yes, service is the natural overflow from obedience. Every command in the Word should be a personal message from the king to me.

But without the understanding that all I do is of grace and nothing of myself, my theme would be jumbled, rambling, and non-sensical. It would be totally without merit to God. The only merit I possess is the merit of Jesus Christ, the gospel of grace. Without His grace and strength, my theme would be self-serving and self-loving. Who am I to think that I could do anything to please God apart from His Son and the saving grace He gave me. Praise God for His great love, for His Son who reconciled us to the Father and gave us His grace and Spirit to live for the glory of the Father.

Father,
I praise You for Your great gifts. Give me the strength to make my life a pleasing theme to You. Grant me the strength to attain to the unity of faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of Christ.
In His name,
Amen
