The Son of God

Jn. 1:34
And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.

What a mission John the Baptist had! Even though he was very noticeable and stirred up much controversy, he wasn't the Messiah or the Son of God. He was commissioned by God before his birth to announce the coming of the Messiah. Even in his mother's womb, he recognized Jesus when he was in Mary's womb. He was clear on his calling and wanted to make sure all knew. I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness. Make straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said.

The Pharisees wanted to know why he was baptizing if he was not the Christ, Elijah, or a prophet. Perhaps it was to prepare the hearts of the people for Jesus, or perhaps it was to show the magnificence of what Christ could do. John could baptize only with water, but Jesus could baptize with the Holy Spirit. Again John attested to the fact that he was not worthy to untie the straps of the sandals of the One who was to follow him.

The next day, Jesus came to him and he announced, Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, After me comes a man who ranks before me, because He was before me.  John was baptizing to reveal to Israel the Son of God. He then makes the definitive announcement: And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.

Father,
Give me the boldness of John to share that Jesus is the Son of God.
In Jesus name,
Amen
